Hosiery Confusion – Clarified

I don’t know about you guys but hosiery terms boggle my mind. Am I wearing tights? Stockings? Pantyhose? Leotards? Tights? How is a girl to know? I haven’t been this confused since trying to distinguish between different types of heels. Y’all KNOW I can’t walk in them. So, my fellow confused leg-wear friends, here are some definitions. Now when your friends ask ‘What are you wearing tonight?’ you can reply with confidence and ease!

Stocking – a close-fitting covering for the foot and part of the leg, usually knitted, of wool, of cotton, nylon, silk or a similar material.

Pantyhose - a one-piece, skintight garment worn by women, combining panties and stockings.

Leotards - a skintight, one-piece garment for the torso, having a high or lowneck, long or short sleeves, and a lower portion resembling either briefs or tights, worn by acrobats, dancers, etc.

Tights- 1. a skin-tight, one-piece garment for the lower part of the body and the legs, now often made of stretch fabric, originally worn by dancers, acrobats, gymnasts, etc., and later made for general wear for adults and children.

2. a leotard with legs and, sometimes, feet.

So, my hose wearing sisters, I hope this little guide to leg wear helps you the way it helped me. Even though the definitions (which I stole from dictionary.com) are all very similar, I can finally see the tight-light! Get it?
